Southend Council’s Deputy Leader, Cllr John Lamb, has expressed his disgust with graffiti vandalism in Southend. Several ‘tags’ appeared on new bus shelters and street signs on the A13 London Road in Leigh, which have since been removed by the Council’s clean-up contractors. Cllr Lamb said: “I was absolutely appalled and disgusted when I saw what these morons had done. “Here we are spending some of our scarce resources on new bus shelters and road signage for the benefit of our Council Tax payers and how do these idiots respond? “Every time we have to call out one of our graffiti teams to remove this disgraceful scrawl it ultimately costs local residents money. “It’s time we started to fight back against these people and made them realise that we won’t tolerate their childish, irresponsible and utterly pea-brained actions. “I would urge anyone who sees one of these so-called ‘taggers’ spraying graffiti to ring the police immediately.” Cllr Tony Cox, Executive Councillor for Public Protection, said: “The Council has just enlisted the services of a new graffiti removal contractor, Community Clean. “They have a wealth of experience in this field and they are committed to providing a reactive and proactive service [...]

By Rachel Charman The Saxon King in Priory Park (SKIPP) pressure group, which opposes the development of Cuckoo Corner and Victoria Circus, has spoken out over the vandalism of Cllr Anna Waite’s home. Cllr Waite is the Council’s portfolio holder for transport and planning in Southend. She has been targeted in some of SKIPP’s campaigns against the redevelopment work around the town, and the group has called for her resignation on a number of occasions. Today, SKIPP representatives condemned the vandalism committed against Cllr Waite last week, in which an unknown vandal painted “VOTE LABOUR” across an outside wall at her home. SKIPP is also concerned that their condemnation of the vandalism has not been reported in the local press, which they feel is unfair. A SKIPP spokesperson told Councilbust.com: “We totally condemn this action. “Despite our differences with Cllr Waite, this was a personal attack on her and we hope the perpetrators are quickly caught and punished for their moronic and malicious actions. “Unfortunately Cllr Waite has elected to imply our involvement in suggesting [the vandalism] was linked with Victoria Circus and Priory Crescent. “We resent this cheap shot. As a highly respected organisation SKIPP maintains far higher ethical standards [...]

By Rachel Charman During the night of 29th April, vandals attacked the home of Executive Councillor for Transport and Planning Anna Waite. Cllr Waite has attracted criticism this year due to the redevelopment of Cuckoo Corner, Priory Crescent and other areas of the town. In the last Council meeting, members of Saxon King In Priory Park (SKIPP) disrupted proceedings and chanted “Waite out! I’d rather hug a tree than Anna Waite!” and other similar comments. Vandals wrote “VOTE LABOUR” along Cllr Waite’s Grade II listed wall in orange paint. Cllr Waite wrote on her blog: “I have spoken to Cllr Norman (Leader of the Labour group) who was very supportive and I don’t imagine for one moment that it was the work of any official or organised Labour effort. “Rather I do think this is the direct result of the untrue, exaggerated and often very personal ‘claims’ that some desperate groups have made recently. “This mindless vandalism is a very sad reflection on whoever did this. “It caused us little difficulty and was gone by mid-morning but speaks volumes about the mentality of some people.” The police have been notified about the issue. Labour candidates Kevin Bonavia (Rochford and Southend East) [...]

By Rachel Charman Conservative councillor for Southchurch Brian Kelly has informed the Council of numerous graffiti tags on the footbridge over the railway at Southend East station. Cllr Kelly has also voiced his anger at the vandalism, and expressed concern over the effect of graffiti on the local community. Cllr Kelly said: “The ‘artists’ could only have sprayed their tags by standing on a service pipe whilst clinging onto the wire mesh, that is ironically there to prevent people on the bridge gaining access to its exterior. “Some of the graffiti is in the centre of the bridge, directly over the tracks and just centimetres from an overhead cable carrying, I understand, 25,000 volts. “It’s a miracle whoever did this wasn’t killed or badly injured. “These youngsters are defacing the area where we live and in the process, frequently put their lives at risk to do it. “I’ve contacted the council to ask if they can get rid of it and am meeting with the local Police to see if we can work together to eradicate this prolific and unsightly scrawl. “Graffiti has a negative effect on the community and the lives of ordinary people. “I believe whoever does this [...]

By Rachel Charman A Southchurch tree planting scheme has been destroyed by vandals, prompting outrage from Conservative councillor Brian Kelly. Cllr Kelly (left) has represented Southchurch since 1997 and is standing for re-election in May. He said: “We have done a new tree planting scheme at Bourne’s Green Roundabout to stop the damage to the verges from vehicles and installed trees to improve the environments of the new cycle way in Royal Artillery Way. “No sooner than these were all planted vandals came along and broke the heads off all the newly planted trees at Bournes Green Roundabout. “That’s more than £1,000 worth of criminal damage, which will double as we now need to replace the trees. “I really hope we will be able to do that as soon as possible, but I just don’t know at the moment. “I just cannot believe how thoughtless and destructive people can be. “Tree planting is all part of my commitment to making Southchurch a much greener place but these people are ruining it for everyone.” Cllr Kelly went on to point out that the Conservative administration has been criticised over its green policies such as the tree felling at Victoria Circus. “What [...]
