By Rachel Charman The development of Southend Airport has been given the seal of approval by Secretary of State John Denham. The future of the airport was thrown into question by government intervention in January, in which Mr Denham reviewed the situation personally. Cllr Anna Waite, who is responsible for transport and planning, told BBC News: “I am extremely pleased the Secretary of State has vindicated the careful consideration given to this application by the development control committee. “It took a great deal of time and effort to produce the balanced report presented to the committee which reflected the views expressed by the various interested parties. “The airport expansion will bring not only travel opportunities but much needed jobs.”

By Shane Croucher A meeting to discuss Southend airport’s expansion has been postponed following the government’s intervention. The Joint Area Action Plan meeting was due to take place on February 2nd, but John Denham, the Secretary of State, issued an Article 14 directive to see if he wants a public inquiry into the proposals. If Mr Denham calls for an inquiry, the expansion, which includes a runway extension and would create 7,300 jobs for the area, could be held up by a year. Councillor Keith Hudson, Rochford District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Planning and Transportation, said the JAAP meeting postponement had been “necessary” following the Article 14 direction. He said: “It is extremely important we get an early decision from the Secretary of State, as to my mind it would be a crying shame to miss this golden opportunity to kick start the local economy, in order to capitalise on the potential provided by the Olympics. “It is hoped that any delay will be kept to a minimum, especially in light of the many redundancies recently announced by some of our local companies.” John Lamb, Deputy Leader of Southend-on-Sea Borough Council, said: “The review of the Airport planning application by [...]

Rochford and Southend East Conservative MP James Duddridge yesterday asked the Secretary of State for claification over the Southend Airport Article 14 Directive. John Denham, Secretary of State, issued an article 14 directive last week. This means that although Southend Borough Council’s Development Control Committee approved plans to expand Southend Airport, those plans cannot go ahead without Mr Denham’s authorisation. If Mr Denham decides not to allow the development to go ahead, a public inquiry into the matter will be launched. There is no time limit by which Mr Denham must make his decision. In Parliament yesterday, Mr Duddridge said to Mr Denham: “The Secretary of State has put forward an article 14 directive in relation to London Southend airport. “It would be helpful to the local community if he could tell us roughly when he will make a decision on that matter, and whether there will be a need for a public inquiry. “The sooner the better.” Mr Denham refused to give an answer to Mr Duddridge’s request. He said: “I understand the hon. Gentleman’s comments, but he will understand why I cannot reply to his question this afternoon.”

By Rachel Charman The development control committee, responsible for decisions about the future of Southend Airport, will meet today at the Civic Centre at 2pm. In an unexpected twist, the government has prevented Southend Borough Council going ahead with the proposed expansion of the airport unless given specific authorisation by Secretary of State John Denham. If the development control committee approve the expansion plans at today’s meeting, the final decision will be frozen. Mr Denham will then decide whether to approve the plans or call a public inquiry into the issue.
