So, we’ve reached the eve of the royal wedding. Let me assure you from the outset this column is not going to contain any lengthy discussion of Kate Middleton’s dress, Prince William’s bald spot, or how many ethnic minorities the Duke of Edinburgh is going to offend during the ceremony (but my bet is on roughly eight). At the same time, I’m not going to engage in any of the puerile and vitriolic whining that has surrounded the wedding either. Now, let’s get one thing straight: I’m not a royalist. I don’t have any commemorative plates with corgis on them. I can’t remember what year Princess Diana died and I regularly confuse Princesses Margaret and Anne. At the same time, I’m not a firebrand republican either. The fact is, despite sitting firmly on the left and in favour of social democracy, try as I might, I just can’t summon up enough enthusiasm for either camp. I’m not going to camp out in Westminster tonight, and I’m not going to call The Firm an unelected inbred cash-sucking monster either. Before everyone starts shouting at once, let me explain. Number one, I don’t believe a constitutional monarch directly challenges the sovereignty of [...]

Following the England football team’s 4-1 defeat by Germany in the World Cup on Sunday, Southend West Conservative MP has called for an investigation into English football. Mr Amess is part of a group of MPs who are demanding changes in the way that football is run. He has called for “an urgent inquiry into the state of our national game” according to BBC News. Mr Amess has tabled a Commons motion which calls England’s exit from the World Cup on Sunday “pathetic” and describes Premier League players as “grossly overpaid and under-performing.” Another Conservative MP, Robert Halfon, has demanded that the FA board resign as soon as possible. Mr Halfon said that Sven-Goran Eriksson, Steve McClaren and Fabio Capello were given “hugely expensive contracts with little result.” Mr Halfon tabled a motion that called for changes at the Football Association, giving fans “more input in decision making.”

Hundreds of people lined the High Street today to watch the Royal Anglian Regiment on its homecoming parade. The parade began at Victorian Square, outside the Odeon cinema, and moved down the High Street, ending at Royal Terrace. During the parade, the troops were inspected by the Mayor, Cllr Ann Holland, as well as Brigadier David Clements, Deputy Colonel of the Royal Anglian Regiment, the Lord Lieutenant of Essex Lord Petre, and the High Sheriff of Essex Michael Hindmarch. Cllr Holland made a speech to the troops during the parade, in which she said: “This is truly a great day. “We are both honoured and proud of our association with you, our County Infantry Battalion, and we are proud of the way in which you deal with the difficult and gangerous job that you do on our behalf; we applaud your efforts and we are delighted to welcome you back from your most recent arduous tour in Afghanistan. “In the midst of this parade we must particularly remember the five comrades who died on duty on your last tour together with the families they have left behind.” The Mayor’s speech was followed by a speech from Brigadier Clements, who said: [...]

Cllr Derek Jarvis, the councillor responsible for Culture, has rebuffed comments from pressure group SKIPP which claim that the new Southend museum plans are ‘pie-in-the-sky.’ SKIPP claims that the museum will cost £50 million, rather than the Council’s estimate of £35 million, and that Southend Council will never be able to obtain the additional £25 million it needs to fund the project. Cllr Jarvis told Councilbust.com: “Sadly this is a litany of half-truths and small minded thoughts based on little if any facts. “All SKIPP appear to wish to achieve is damaging the Town’s opportunity to provide a quality Museum. “We have tried on several occasions to explain to them our commitment to delivering this project but they seem unable to see the merits of the New Museum and Gallery in its Cliffs location. “We are now at the Planning Application stage for full Planning permission and the Architects AEW are located in the town at an office close to the site in the arches adjacent to the Pier, open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9.30 am to 5pm to provide an opportunity for residents and visitors to learn more about the scheme and contribute ideas. “Hence we announced this [...]

Pressure group SKIPP has called the Southend Council’s plans for a new museum ‘pure fantasy’ after an artist’s impression of the new building was released this week. The museum, which would house the Saxon King excavated on Priory Crescent and simultaneously repair the cliff slip on the seafront, will cost around £35 million to complete. Cllr Derek Jarvis, who is responsible for culture, has said that of that figure, the Council itself will contribute around £10 million. The rest, he told the Echo, could come from heritage lottery funding, donations, benefactors, and private investment. He pointed out that the new Tate St Ives gallery in Cornwall and the Sage Gateshead in Newcastle are both funded with both public and private money. The SKIPP committee, however, is not convinced. In a statement, SKIPP said: “Southend Borough Council has released pretty pictures of their never-never plans for the pie-in-the-sky ‘cliff slip’ museum. The figures just don’t stack up, the money is pure fantasy cash, and the time scale is dangerously long. “£35million is a huge sum of money; however, this only covers the construction costs (at 2007 prices) and does not include the cost of shoring up the cliff slip. “When the [...]

Mayor Ann Holland has urged Southend residents to attend a homecoming parade for returning troops in Southend this month. The 1st Battalion of the Royal Anglian Regiment will march down Southend High Street on Thursday 17th June at 12.30pm. The march will start outside the Odeon cinema and finish at Pier Hill. Mrs Holland said: “The troops are doing such a great job. “When you turn on the news and see those who have come back with limbs missing, I have got nothing but praise for how they carry on. “I am proud and very honoured to be able to greet them. “My father was in the Essex Regiment which went into the Royal Anglians. “I think people forget what a hard time they have. Often they have young children and for us to be able to honour them is terrific. It will be really nice to be in front of them and speak from the heart to say how proud I am. “The more people there to greet them and show we support what they do for us would be great.”

The Citizen of Southend Awards, sponsored by Southend Radio and Adventure Island, may be cancelled due to a lack of nominations. The awards scheme, in which people who make outstanding contributions to their community, or performs acts of selfless kindness or courage, has been open for nominations since 1st February this year. The closing date is 30th June, but there are only a few nominations so far. Adventure Island Executive Chairman Phillip Miller, who is part of the judging panel for the awards, has made a plea to Southend people to nominate someone they think deserves recognition. Mr Miller said: “We have sent leaflets to hundreds of people, have posters all over the town and have done extensive marketing and PR, all with huge support from Southend Council, so it’s not like people do not know about the Awards, they just don’t seem to be interested, which is a terrible shame. “The whole ethos of Citizen of Southend was to give a special award to people who had given of themselves to help others and say a huge thank you to them. “It is about reminding the whole community that we all have a role to play in helping others.
