It has been a while since anything has been reported on Councilbust.com, as I am sure regular readers are aware. Having popped back to the site today to check up on it, I scrolled through some of the many hundreds of comments Southend people have left on the site in that time, and that prompted me to write and explain a few things. Firstly, in the two years since I created the news site, demand and support for it has been incredible. It began as somewhere to write the news that is already in the papers, but with perhaps a more balanced view, and less reliance on the news frames used in some print publications, which have become out of date. Gradually, as the site grew more popular, local people began calling and emailing in with stories, many of which were fascinating and which had not appeared anywhere else. Councilbust.com became an investigative news source in its own right, shown in the stories about Cllr Jason Luty’s campaign in Westborough in December last year, or, more recently, the offensive language used by BNP candidate Tony Gladwyn on his Facebook page in May 2010. These stories were the result of local [...]

The results of a poll conducted by Councilbust.com reveal overwhelming support from the site’s readers for the proposed expansion of Southend airport. In a public, online poll of 100 respondents, the response was generally positive about the proposed expansion plans, which have been strongly opposed by some local residents. 89% of respondents agreed that the expansion of the airport was positive for Southend, and would bring with it many business and job opportunities. 6% of respondents said that the expansion plan is a good idea in theory, but expressed some apprehension, saying that more thought should go into whether or not people in Southend would benefit before development goes ahead. 4% of respondents said that though the airport expansion may well bring job and business opportunities, the potential noise pollution and council expense of the project would outweigh any benefits. Finally, 1% of respondents said that airport expansion would be entirely pointless and bring no benefit to Southend residents and businesses whatsoever.
Hey there citizens. This site for anyone who is looking for informed, balanced and up-to-date reporting on Southend Council. There are currently two types of reporting in Southend on its council. First, there’s the rumour, scandal and often flagrant exaggeration published by various local news services. We all know that bad news sells papers. That’s why this reporting is often out of context, badly researched, and massively biased. Then, there’s the PR spun out by the council itself in papers, local trade magazines and online. This, of course, is always good news. There is currently no independent coverage of council news. This site aims to create such coverage, positioning itself between the scandal and the sugar-coated. Contributions, leads, feedback and questions are all welcome. Just post a comment and we’ll get back to you. Go ahead. Enjoy some grown-up news about your local area.
