After five days of intense negotiations, Conservative leader David Cameron is now the Prime Minister.
Mr Cameron was given permission by the Queen last night to form a government. He will form a coalition government with Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg.
In a surprise speech, Labour’s Gordon Brown resigned as Prime Minister and Labour party leader, after it became clear through negotiation that a Labour-Liberal coalition was not possible.
Mr Brown thanked voters, activists, his wife and his children in an emotional speech, and wished his successor well.
Mr Cameron’s new cabinet will contain both Conservative and Liberal Democrat ministers.
Nick Clegg is now the Deputy Prime Minister, a position created by Tony Blair. Vince Cable will be given a position in business or banking, probably with a brief to oversee the banking system, but it is not clear what this role will be yet. Chris Huhne is set to become the Energy and Climate Change Secretary. David Laws is tipped to become Education Secretary, and Danny Alexander, author of the Liberal Democrat manifesto, may become Scottish Secretary.
Conservative stalwart William Hague is now the Foreign Secretary. Mr Cameron’s close friend and ally George Osbourne is the Chancellor, and Liam Fox is the Defence Secretary. The Health Secretary is Andrew Lansley.
