Redevelopment of the Warrior Square Gardens began today with a ground-breaking ceremony.

The redevelopment of Warrior Square Gardens is funded by the Homes and Communities Agency.

The project will include the construction of a cafe. The aim of the project is to re-establish the gardens as an amenity for workers, visitors, shoppers and students in central Southend.

Cllr Derek Jarvis, executive for culture, said: “The Warrior Square Gardens project will kick start a major revitalisation of the most important green space in Southend town centre.”

The gardens area is disconnected from the main line of southend central, and on the doorstep of the exit of major clubs. The cafe will only get limited interest in competetion with major competers in the high street. Can’t help but feel this 1.5 million park is promising what it just can’t achieve. That it will return to a rarely used park , which is used more by the drunk clubbers and drug users than the shoppers.
