Conservative MP James Duddridge has again requested information on the government’s actions to tackle anabolic steroid abuse.
Mr Duddridge this time wrote to Home Secretary Jacqui Smith, asking “what recent discussions she has had on the classification of anabolic steroids.â€
In a written reply, Parliamentary Under-Secretary at the Home Office Alan Campbell said:
”Anabolic steroids are controlled as Class C drugs under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971.
“The Government have accepted the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs recommendation to control a further 24 anabolic steroids and two non-steroidal agents (growth promoters) as Class C drugs and Schedule 4 Part 2 of the Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001 so as not to preclude legitimate use on prescription.
“A formal, public consultation on this proposal will be published shortly.â€
Mr Duddridge has already attempted to hold the government to account regarding its role in tackling steroid abuse, following the death of teenaged marine cadet Matthew Dear, allegedly after taking steroids.
Mr Duddridge requested information on what the government had been doing to counter steroid abuse, and how much had been spent on this endeavour; you can read about this here.
