amess1This year’s May Day celebrations were held in Old Leigh on Monday 4th May.

In traditional style, entertainers performed morris dances, mummers plays and maypole dancing.

The event was opened with a speech from Mayor Gwen Horrigan, who also crowned this year’s May Queen.

Conservative MP David Amess was also present at the proceedings, and made several addresses to the crowd.

Mr Amess’ participation caused some disturbance amongst the crowd, however. At one point, after making a mistake about the running order of the entertainments for the day for the second time during a speech, a member of crowd shouted:

“Will you go away? You just keep ballsing everything up!”

As the comments were made mostly in jest, Mr Amess continued his speech and stayed until the end of the festivities.
